we now have some layer hens for sale they should beging to lay before Xmas we also have the next batch who should lay in Jan 2010

prices vary depends on age ( ie how much food they have eaten) so the older they are the closer they are to laying and the more they cost.

Often I see these birds being sold for between $5 & $7 each,  the problem is they are ex layers who are usually about 2 years old  and have spent the last 18 months laying continually . This is achieved artificially by using lights and curtains to trick them into thinking the day length is not getting shorter.

While I have had chooks for over 40 years now it was in 1990 that I started to look at rare breeds rather than the mixed breeds we kept just for eggs and meat in the past.
