Petty's open apple of the year 2009

Kidd's Orange Red is the 2009 winner of Apple of the year at the Petty's open day.

With parents such as Cox's Orange Pippin and Delicious how could you go wrong. It was developed in NZ in 1924

The anouncement and other highlights of the day will be seen on a new garden show for SBS with Costa that was filmed on the day where Silvia, the President of Heritage Fruits Society Inc. counted the votes and anounced to the crowd the winner for 2009.

This apple is sweet and crisp when ripe and the tree is reported to be a good one to leave unpruned as it does not affect the cropping of fruit, it is however not a huge commercial style cropper which is not a bad thing for a home gardener.

It is also a late season apple that ripens in cold or warm weather making a useful addition to your orchard to spread the ripening times and needs low chill.

The pollination number is F12 so it should help in pollinating some of those later varieties such as Pink Lady and it is of T2 Medium vigour, I would like to match it with Cox's Orange Pippin or Queen Cox as a dual grafted tree this year.

We will have scion for this years grafting day off the winning tree if you would like a tree grafted to onbe of 6 sizes from very dwaft to mid size then send an email, or scion will be available to graft onto your existing trees.

Ours on the day showed more dominant red stripes over the blush that you see above this was due to the heat this summer with all fruit looking more colourful this year.
